About this blog

I am a food scientist by profession. I am passionate about everything food-cooking, eating and understanding it!!

Food Scientist do everything from concept to launching a new product in the market. We work in the lab starting with prototypes and scale the concept up to to commercial level making sure that it can produced consistently every time. It is lot of fun working on new products and we literally eat our mistakes:-). I have worked on varied products including cakes, confections and beverages.

This blog started  when my mom handed 2 books : Traditional Iyengar Food and Utta Ballavanige Roga villa (roughly translated : If you know you Food, you don't get sick ). Both books are in my local language : Kannada.

Traditional Food: I did not know how to cook till a month before I was about to leave to US. My mom made me follow her around the kitchen and watch her cook. my mom never followed recipes and everything is based on intuition. She would show the amount she was adding and she would say use your eyes and determine the how much of ingredient you need to add. I used to tell her that " you don't want to teach me how to cook" How will I ever know how much spice to add to a particular dish? . 10 years later, I do  the same thing and cook by intuition.

Know your Food :  My mom always wanted me or one of sibling to be  a doctor but she rarely went to doctor when she was sick. We would always tease her that with patients like you doctors would go bankrupt. She would have home remedies for most common ailments and before taking medicine she would look in the kitchen cupboard and find spices that would sooth the symptoms. When I became a mom, I hated giving medication to every single thing my son would have.  I started using home medication when I can for simple things like Coughs and cold.
